only thing i’m gonna say about this “delena is abusive” stuff i’m seeing floating around:
delena can be abusive. but so can all other ships on this show, even the more “innocent” relationships, like maroline. the point is that damon and elena do overstep their boundaries when it comes to one another, but the writers don’t brush over those actions and romanticize them. for example, in 2x20, damon feeds elena his blood so that she can live, an action that can be SEEN as abusive, and the writers don’t let damon get away with that. they make damon try and redeem himself. and in 4x23, when elena decides that she wants to save damon’s life by using the cure on him AGAINST HIS WILL, that can be seen as abusive. but the writers don’t ignore how wrong it is, by having damon himself call elena out on how a few seconds ago she was talking about how she wanted to make sure silas didn’t destroy humanity, but she was willing to throw it all away for him.
what i’m saying is that delena DOES have problematic aspects to their relationship. the important part is that the writers point them out and make it a point to show their flaws and how those flaws make damon and elena who they are. this is very different from most of the other relationships on this show (not gonna name any in particular…) because the writers don’t go out of their way to point out the problematic aspects in the other relationships.
damon and elena are real. they have issues. they do things the other may not want because they love each other too much. that’s who they are and if the writers continue to portray them the way they’re being portrayed right now, i’m fine with that.
so im watching btvs from the beginning and i was so open to shipping bangel, but like, i dont feel anything and i’m really frustrated

There are people who are still worried that the way 3x22 framed it, Stefan will always be “Elena’s human choice.” Let’s sit down and talk why it’s not actually a bad thing.
I think many of us attach way too much importance to the notion of choice. A choice is not something completely final, ultimate, and most importantly, not always good. It’s nothing more than it is, a decision you make because of certain factors. Our choices change our lives, sometimes the affect who they are, but very few of them change us irrevocably. Forever.
As for 3x22, it actually created one of the most beautiful Damon/Elena parallels.
We can name multiple reasons why Elena chose wrong in 3x22. This post is not meant to explore Elena’s mind and heart. Let’s just say that based on what she thought she was supposed to do, she made this choice, having no idea what would happen next.
Because of her choice, she makes Matt drive back to Stefan, dies and turns into a vampire. Very soon, she realizes she cannot be with Stefan, because her feelings for Damon are too strong. Her desire to be with Damon has nothing to do with choices:
Julie Plec: It’s not about her choice anymore. She made hers. It’s about how her life evolves.
Now let’s look at Damon in the same context.
2x22
Damon (hallucinating): I choose you, Katherine.
Later in the same episode:
Damon: No one forced me to love her. It was my own choice. I made thewrong choice.
and then:
Damon: I’ve made a lot of choices that have gotten me here. It’s ok. ‘Cause if I’d have chosen differently, I wouldn’t have met you.
Do you see? Katherine was Damon’s human choice. For quite a while, she was his vampire choice, too. Does that choice define who he is? Yes, partly. Does it affect his feelings for Elena? Lessen his love for her? No. We never even fathom that Damon’s love for Elena could be in any way corrupted because he used to love Katherine.
So for a while, Stefan was Elena’s choice. It wasn’t even for 150 years. It was for a little over a year, the choice of a young, scared girl with a lot of post-traumatic issues and more tragedy in her life than anyone should handle.
Yes, the circumstances were different. Damon didn’t choose between Elena and Katherine - except maybe in 2x07. I think the problem may be that the show likes to frame Elena’s decision as “choice between brothers.” It’s not. It doesn’t have to be. Elena made the choice to stay with Stefan in 3x22. Elena made the choice not to go there with Damon yet. Why these two choices should only be viewed as “chosing one over the other” - I don’t know.
Despite the difference, the general outline is poetically the same: they both make the wrong choice, they both die and turn into vampires because of it and as life goes on, they realize that there’s something better, more beautiful, morereal.
